Reading, writing & listening skills

Why?

Improving reading skills is very important as we head towards the national tests this spring! And, since Lemshaga is participated in Skolverkets Läslyftet, it’s a great chance to practice the new ideas we have learned.

 

Reading Alone & Aloud:

Every lesson begins with 20-25 minutes of silent reading. Students are allowed to use computers if they need to look-up words. They can also sit in reading groups and read aloud to one another. Jessica and myself will be checking in on the students to both listen and help them.

We have a variety of books for different learner levels and tastes. I try my best to match the students with a book that is appropriate for them. The books contain strong heroes or heroines who exhibit courage, and ingenuity.

 

 

 

After our silent reading students will write about their books answering questions or filling in graphic organizers (in-texts). They will learn about character, setting, plot, theme, and conflict.

Students will re-write their notes into a book review at the end of the unit. They will be guided with graphic organizers that will help them organize their thoughts, and ideas.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Listening:

Students will listen to each other during discussions, while reading aloud, and respond either orally or in writing.

 

Themes

Focus will be on courage. What is courage? Who is courageous in our society, or in the world? How do the characters exhibit courage in the books? What challenges do they face and how do they solve them? What mistakes are made along the way that help them learn? Focusing on such a theme supports the students in their personal growth and also as a class; how can we be more courageous at school and in society, in our own lives? What does a true hero or heroine do?

 

Lesson Routine:

Having a clear routine for lessons helps the students feel secure because they can predict what they will be working on and what is expected of them.

1. Quiet reading 20-25 minutes (can use computers to look-up words)
2. Written reflections on character, setting, theme, plot (in-texts) 20 minutes
3. Discussion in groups or pairs 15 minutes
4. Practice vocabulary from book by looking it up and writing sentences, building Quizlet vocabulary lists

Assessments

Formative: 

• Listening and taking notes while students read aloud to one another
• In-texts: as students write their responses to their texts I can evaluate their reading comprehension and their written ability
• Discussions: students participation in both group and class discussions allows me to form an understanding of their abilities
• Strategies: when students practice their vocabulary in Quizlet, and in their notebooks, they are using a strategy that will help them with both reading and writing.

Summative:

• Final writing project (due before March Break): students will write a five paragraph review of their book based on their notes on the book (in-texts) which will show both writing skills and the students’ comprehension of their novels.

Relevant Kunskapskrav för årskurs 6 (nivå E)

Eleven kan förstå det mest väsentliga av innehållet i tydligt talad, enkel engelska i lugnt tempo samt i enkla texter om vardagliga och välbekanta ämnen. Eleven visar sin förståelse genom att i enkel form redogöra för och kommentera innehållet samt genom att med godtagbart resultat agera utifrån budskap och instruktioner i innehållet. För att underlätta sin förståelse av innehållet i det talade språket och texterna kan eleven välja och använda sig av någon strategi för lyssnande och läsning. Eleven kan välja texter och talat språk av enkel karaktär samt med viss relevans använda det valda materialet i sin egen produktion och interaktion.

I muntliga och skriftliga framställningar av olika slag kan eleven formulera sig enkelt och begripligt med fraser och meningar. För att förtydliga och variera sin kommunikation kan eleven bearbeta och göra enstaka enkla förbättringar av egna framställningar. I muntlig och skriftlig interaktion kan eleven uttrycka sig enkelt och begripligt med ord, fraser och meningar. Dessutom kan eleven välja och använda sig av någon strategi som löser problem i och förbättrar interaktionen.
